Born 17 August 1887 St Ann’s Bay Jamaica, Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jnr was one of the most powerful and charismatic icons of the twentieth century. He was a propagator of Pan Africanism in Jamaica and the United States of America and founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). He also established the Black Star Line - a shipping line dedicated to returning all pan-africans to Africa. Garvey was known to have a unique philosophy with regard to empowering pan-africans mentally, spiritually and economically - it came to be named ‘Garveyism’ and its ethos grew to inspire the Nation of Islam and Rastafari movements. Garvey quotes have stood the test of time for Africans around the world. In the in spirit of the diaspora Garvey said: "Nationhood is the only means by which modern civilisation can completely protect itself. Independence of nationality, independence of government, is the means of protecting not only the individual, but the group. Nationhood is the highest ideal of all peoples." Garvey passed on 10 June 1940. Black screen print on white. 96% cotton 4% elastane.
